Native Plants Series: Eastern White Pine

Can you believe we've only had two trees so far in the Native Plants Series? Time for another one!

The eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) is native to South Central PA and most of the eastern US and Canada. This guy is fast growing and will get 50'-80' tall and up to 40' wide. Remember that when you go to purchase one and make sure you have an appropriate site for it! It is easily grown in full sun and acidic soils, but does not like compacted or clay soils. This pine has blue-green 5" needles that are soft to the touch and cylindrical cones 4-8" long.

This tree is a caterpillar host plant to 243 species of butterflies and moths.
